Flexcold stands for "Intelligently harnessing the flexibility of cold storage facilities to optimize the use of renewable energy."
In 2011, BECOLD investigated whether the flexibility available to cold storage companies could be used to maximize the use of renewable energy. The first step was to examine what flexibility could be offered by cold storage facilities and how they could be optimally matched to the imbalance at an energy supplier. Technical and economic feasibility were then investigated. Finally, a new business model was developed for practical application among BECOLD members.
